Further information
Let yourself be conquered by the charm of a trekking excursion in the Gorropu Canyon, in the wild Supramonte of Urzulei and Orgosolo. From the bed of the Flumineddu river, one of the deepest canyons in Europe has come to life, with great charm for its narrow paths along rocky walls that rise up to 500 meters. We leave from the town of Su Cungiadeddu aboard our 4×4 off-road vehicle.
We pass the ford of the Rio Flumineddu and begin our walk in the middle of the forest of strawberry trees, holm oaks and Mediterranean scrub along the walls of Monte Oddeu”. The goal is to reach the point where the real “Su Gorropu” Canyon begins, one of the deepest canyons in Europe. From erosive origins, 1.5 km long, the limestone rock walls of Su Gorropu have been shaped over time by the force of the Flumineddu stream. The river now flows on the bottom, fed by waters that cross the Supramonte and its bed infiltrates underground tunnels or re-emerges with springs further downstream of the gorge. Starring the mouflons, the golden eagle, the geotriton and the Sardinian euprotto endemic to the supramontane streams, we admire a fauna typical of the place that enchants not only tourists but also those who have always inhabited these lands. As you continue with the exploration of the gorge, the excursion becomes so demanding that you have to use your hands to overcome the large boulders lying on the bed of the Rio Flumineddu. The stop of the discovery route of the gorge comes from nature which at a certain point becomes too narrow to be covered with a simple trek. We conclude the experience with a regenerating break under one of the fascinating rock walls and then we go back to the off-road vehicle.
